During the third year of my PhD at the Department of Information Engineering, I had the opportunity to spend six months conducting research at the BAMM (Basel Muscle MRI) group at the University of Basel.
I left for Basel on September 28, 2024 with two suitcases and a bit of apprehension and returned to Padua on March 31, 2025 with the same two suitcases – this time full and grateful for the beauty I experienced during those months. Over that period, I rediscovered my passion for my project, which focused on the development of artificial intelligence techniques for the segmentation of the choroid plexus, a vascular brain structure located within the cerebral ventricles. You may be wondering why I chose to collaborate with a leading group in MRI sequence design for the musculoskeletal system, since my project has to do with brain MRI. It’s a valid question: the reason lies in the methodology, which is fundamental in the bioengineering field. In fact, PD Dr. Francesco Santini, my supervisor in Basel, developed, together with his colleagues, Dafne, a federated incremental learning framework for the segmentation of musculoskeletal MRI images. My small contribution to this wonderful project of the BAMM group was to integrate my choroid plexus segmentation toolbox, ASCHOPLEX, within Dafne. To accomplish this, I faced many challenges and learned much more than I ever hoped for, especially about MRI image acquisition and Open Science.
However, none of this would have been possible without the wonderful people I met. PhD students, researchers, radiology technicians, professors: each of them, with great professionalism, kindness, and international perspective, enriched me as a person and gave me the opportunity to live an unforgettable and truly “Swiss” experience during my stay in Basel. A special thank you goes to PD Dr. Francesco Santini and Prof. Oliver Bieri, to the Physical Radiology group at the University Hospital of Basel, and to all the members of the BAMM group: Dr. Claudia Weidensteiner, Dr. Xeni Deligianni, Dr. Marta Maggioni, Dr. Jessica Schäper, and Sabine Räuber.

Durante questo terzo anno di dottorato presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Informazione, ho avuto la possibilita’ di trascorrere sei mesi di attivita’ di ricerca presso il gruppo BAMM (Basel Muscle MRI) dell’Universita’ di Basilea.
Sono partita per Basilea il 28 settembre 2024 con due valigie e un po’ di paure e sono ritornata a Padova il 31 marzo 2025 con le stesse due valigie, ma stavolta piena e grata della bellezza vissuta in quei mesi. Durante questi mesi mi sono riscoperta appassionata per il mio progetto, incentrato sullo sviluppo di tecniche di intelligenza artificiale per la segmentazione del plesso coroideo, una particolare struttura cerebrale situata all’interno dei ventricoli cerebrali. Vi starete chiedendo come mai ho scelto di collaborare con un gruppo leader in progettazione di sequenze MRI per apparato muscolo-scheletrico, dal momento che il mio progetto ha a che fare con MRI cerebrale. La domanda è lecita: rispondo che ho scelto la metodologia, fondamentale in ambito bioingegneristico. Difatti, il PD Dr. Francesco Santini, il mio supervisore a Basilea, ha sviluppato, insieme ai suoi colleghi, Dafne, un framework di federated incremental learning per la segmentazione di immagini MRI dell’apparato muscolo-scheletrico. Il mio piccolo contributo a questo bellissimo progetto del gruppo BAMM e’ stato integrare il mio toolbox per la segmentazione del plesso coroideo, ASCHOPLEX, all’interno di Dafne. Per fare ciò, ho affrontato molte sfide e ho imparato molto più di quello che avrei mai sperato, soprattutto riguardo l’acquisizione di immagini MRI e l’Open Science.
Tuttavia, nulla di tutto questo sarebbe stato possibile senza le meravigliose persone che ho incontrato. Dottorandi, ricercatori, tecnici radiologi, professori: ognuno di loro, con grande professionalita’, umanita’ e internazionalita’, mi ha arricchito come persona e mi ha dato la possibilita’ di vivere un’esperienza indimenticabile e veramente “svizzera” durante la mia permanenza a Basilea. Un ringraziamento personale va al PD Dr. Francesco Santini e al Prof. Oliver Bieri, al gruppo della Radiologia Fisica dell’Ospedale Universitario di Basilea, e a tutti i membri del gruppo BAMM: Dr. Claudia Weidensteiner, Dr. Xeni Deligianni, Dr. Marta Maggioni, Dr. Jessica Schäper, e Sabine Räuber.
